Independent Learner

Being an independent learner is the kind people aspire for. The requirements for being an independent learner easy can mean having self-discipline and tough can mean determine your own path to map out the future. In the course of the language art class, the discussion of requirements for being an independent learner has concluded into main eleven parts: knowing when to ask for help, control your own learning(how-how much-what), engaged, discover for yourself more meaningful, sense of insecurity, question and practice, different views, time management, self-discipline, evaluate sources, together with choosing your own path which is a difficulty for most of the people.
Granted, it appears puzzling and intricate, but in other perspective it has the possibility to accomplish if only we can make an effort and endeavor despite of the tendency to fail. Certain fields are easier or even can be learned such as knowing when to ask for help, question and practice, and evaluate sources, and I have known very few people who have hardships with these problems. To the contrary, those requirements which cannot be learned such as discover your self and choosing your own path, often perplexed most of the people in the thought that they have no conviction and are by no means sure the right and wrong of their decisions. Incidentally, I am the one of this kind of people. So why? Is that complicated enough for us to determine right and wrong? That is where the rub is. The answer may vary or even by definition impossible. Say, intelligent a man may be, the man know of no idea of his next second of life whether be a disaster or a fortune, not to mention his future after ten years. To such reason, yet another must be added. Another not least cause is that people often lay stress on facts and figures, but ignorant of the discovery of one’s strength or weakness which hampers the full development of life and thus deny oneself the opportunity of knowing his/her preponderance.
What is needed is the case of the requirements that cannot be learned is that people may endeavor to try different things with faith in order to discover our own value and start to make some small decisions in daily life. The progress will become more and more manifest so that the difficulties we reckon in the past will eventually be conquered. With the personalities we already have together with others we try to improve, it is deemed for me that in this way we will gradually become a independent learner.

  1. Sophie, you are clearly an independent thinker, which is some of the highest praise I can give. Your insights are thoughtful and thought provoking and there is much in this post worthy of discussion.

I was particularly interested to read your comment about “things that cannot be learned”. To “try different with faith in order to discover our own value” is something we should all aspire to, and epitomises being courageous in your learning, a characteristic of a Leman Learner.

This is a great reflection on the concept of an independent learner, Sophie. Well done.
